The Gurney Training Centre for the Blind
Blindness need not be the end of everything. The Gurney Training Centre can be your gateway to a new life of hope, opportunities, productivity and meaningful living.
The Gurney Training Centre (GTC) was set up in 1953 and its main objective is to provide the blind with rehabilitation and vocational training services.

Enrichment courses
1. VOCATIONAL TRAINING
This programme you will be able to acquire knowledge and skills aimed at preparing you for employment. The courses available include woodwork, massage, telephony and information communication technology. English language courses are also available. The duration of the courses ranges from 1 - 2 semesters.
2. REHABILITATION PROGRAMME
This programme is aimed at those who become blind later on in their lives. Its objective is to provide the necessary guidance for the client to readjust themselves to their new condition. Through this programme, you have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills in orientation and mobility, daily living skills, cooking, Braille, touch-typing, computer literacy and social skills. The duration of this programme is 1 semester (5 months).
3. CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME
Through the co-curricular programme you are offered further opportunities for personal development, enrichment and relaxation. The activities include indoor games as chess, scrabble, carrom, pingpong, goalball and bowling. A gymnasium is available for the promotion of physical fitness. The outdoor activities include swimming, tandem-riding, camping and excursions.
4. FOOD AND BOARD
All trainees are provided food and board at our hostel. However, those living in the Klang Valley are encouraged to commute from their homes to give opportunities to more trainees from out of the Klang Valley.
5. ADMISSION TO THE GTC
- You can apply through your District Social Welfare Office by using the prescribed form provided. The Social Welfare Department will then refer your application to the GTC for consideration. The cost of training for successful applicants will be borne by the Social Welfare Department.
- For those who are employed before they become blind, they can request their employers to pay for their cost of training. In such cases, application can be made directly to the GTC.
- Employees who become blind who are making SOCSO contributions can also apply through SOCSO. In such cases, application can be made directly to us by SOCSO who shall bare all the cost of training.
There are 2 admissions in a year i.e. in January and July. Successful applicants will receive an offer letter from the GTC giving further information on their training programme.

Kindly contact the GTC Office for further information at Tel. No. 03-22722677 ext. 201 or 202 from Monday - Thursday between 8:30 am - 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm, Friday between 8:30 am - 12:00 pm and 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm, and Saturday between 8:30 am - 1:00 pm (off on 2nd and 4th Saturdays).
